Walking in Bathurst Harbour and Port Davey is as diverse and interesting as kayaking. From most of the
beaches in the Bathurst Narrows it is possible to walk up surrounding mountains using established tracks or
even pick your way through the low heath scrub that dominates most of the hillsides.
Even the short peaks boast magnificent views and it’s well worth the effort to get up high and see where
you have kayaked or walked.
There are small footpads to the summits of Mt Rugby, Mt Misery and Mt Milner, with Mt Rugby the highest peak in the
area. From Mt Rugby on a clear day it is possible to see Port Davey, the Breaksea Islands, Bathurst Narrows,
Melaleuca and islands off the South coast - Maatsuyker Island in particular. Walks range in duration from 2 hours
to 1 day and often have accessible beaches from which to land kayaks and running creeks from which to fill your
water bottle.
A number of other walking tracks criss-cross the Bathurst Harbour – Port Davey region and it is possible to combine
longer walks and paddling if time permits. The other tracks include South West Cape from Melaleuca via Cox’s Bight,
the South Coast track to Cockle Creek and the Port Davey track to Lake Pedder. |
